Paper! Get your paper here!

See the source imageNow that I have your attention, let's talk about materials and resources at North Providence. The school uses an online program called Skyward. This program is where attendance is done by each teacher and students have access to Skyward to find out their grades as well as the classes they are taking. I don't believe North Providence is a one-to-one school, one-to-one meaning each student is provided with a Chromebook that is "theirs" to use throughout the school year. Some classrooms had laptop carts that students could borrow from as well as a computer lab. All of the materials provided to the students were hard copies, for this reason, however, an electronic copy was made available as well. Some students had their own notebooks to write in and those who didn't have their own were given a piece of paper. I didn't see any students ask for a writing utensil but Mr. Ramos and his cooperating teacher Mrs. Ryan had a big jar full of pens that I am assuming was for students. Mr. Ramos is providing the students with folders that they will be able to leave with him so that they don't have to carry around sheets of loose paper. He has also provided some students with notebooks so that they can be prepared for his class- and their other classes! Mr. Ramos does not have 1 room that he teachers, but rather 3 different rooms, so he is lugging all of his materials from class to class and despite his insisting that he is unorganized, he always seems to have the materials he needs (it's really only the technology that is unreliable). Each classroom has a whiteboard and a projector that teachers can hook their laptops up to so that they can display the day's assignments, as well as examples for the different writing prompts they will be doing. As far as where teachers can print and copy materials for their classes, they do have access to a copier/printer, however, I am unsure of where exactly this copier/printer is. Students have access to a printer in the computer lab and the library, which has been closed during lunch, at least for the first week.

My first week at North Providence went awesome! Mr. Ramos is a super engaging teacher and is very open with his students. He is very flexible and has already offered some great ideas for lessons as well as offered his help with anything to Cheyenne and myself. I can't wait to go back on the 30th.

  1. Jaci,
I don't think I payed enough attention to the use of technology in the classroom. I love that you talk about the Chrome books and the projectors the teachers used. I feel like prepping for students with pens and paper, like you mentioned, is fairly easy compared to prepping yourself for the stumbling blocks that sometimes come with increased technology use. I have to keep this in mind; I remember my first lesson I ever taught to a real class of students (at NPHS, actually) I had a plan for a mini lesson and it went a little off the rails because I had not anticipated the time I would need to adjust to technology I was unfamiliar with. It's not simple, but I definitely think it is a nuts and bolts sort of thing.
